    Easy Apple Crumble For BLW

Who doesn’t love apple crumble! I love it and I will eat an apple crumble as often as I can on a Sunday!

I wanted to make an apple crumble that my son could eat that wasn’t full of sugar. So I wanted to create a healthy dessert.

I also wondered if that existed, and what I mean by that is would it taste any good! I think this version is tasty and would easily make a delicious dessert any day of the week, as it is such a basic recipe. Simple recipes are always the best!

    Baby Apple Crumble Recipe

I have traditionally used Bramley apples for the apple crumble as I feel these apples are the best for an apple crumble by far.

They taste sweeter than eating apples and when cooked have the most perfect consistency, in my opinion.

You could use a usual eating apple for the this recipe, However they won’t break down as much as the Bramley apples do.

So, if you prefer a bite to your apple crumble eating apples will be for you. Or you could use a combination of the two.

When Can I Introduce Apple To My Baby?

Baby-led weaning is an exciting milestone in your little one's journey of exploring new tastes and textures. When it comes to introducing apples, it's essential to consider your baby's readiness.

Typically, around six to eight months of age, when they can sit up unassisted and have developed the necessary hand-eye coordination skills, is a good time to start introducing this delicious and nutritious fruit.

Begin by offering slices of soft, cooked apple that your baby can grasp easily. As they grow more accustomed to solid foods, you can progress to thicker slices or even small chunks to encourage their developing chewing abilities.

Remember to always supervise your baby during feeding time and consult with your health visitor for personalised guidance on introducing apples or any new food during the baby-led weaning journey.

    Do Oats Go Off?

Oats, being a pantry staple, are often wondered if they have an expiration date or if they ever go off. Fortunately, oats have a remarkable shelf life if stored properly, ensuring their freshness for a long time.

The longevity of oats largely depends on their variety, processing method, and storage conditions.

Unopened oats can generally last for up to one to two years beyond their printed expiration date, while opened oats, if stored in an airtight container in a cool and dry place, can remain edible and enjoyable for six months to one year.

To preserve their quality, it is advisable to keep oats away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight, as exposure to these elements may lead to spoilage and a change in taste.

Therefore, by following these simple guidelines, oats can remain a reliable and nutritious option for your breakfast or baking endeavours.

    Are Oats Naturally Gluten-Free?

Oats are a versatile and nutritious option for those with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease.

However, cross-contamination during processing is a common concern, as oats are often grown and processed alongside gluten-containing grains like wheat, barley, and rye.

To ensure that oats are truly gluten-free, it is recommended to look for certified gluten-free oats that have been tested and labeled as such.

These oats undergo strict testing procedures to guarantee their purity and eliminate any risk of gluten contamination.

By choosing certified gluten-free oats, your baby can enjoy the health benefits of oats without worrying about potential gluten exposure. A great way to involve them in all meal time options with the entire family.

    Baby Apple Crumble Recipe

The good thing with oats is that they are naturally rough and full of texture so instead of using flour and butter, oats and butter end up with a similar consistency.

I have of course used unsalted butter as I do not use salted butter in recipes for my son. The crumbly texture has worked out really well. I’m really pleased with it.

    Sugar Free Apple Oat Crumble

A no added sugar apple oat crumble is an excellent choice for baby-led weaning. This wholesome dish provides a delightful combination of textures and flavours while ensuring optimal nutrition for our little ones.

Made with natural sweeteners like bramley apples and a sprinkling of nutmeg, this crumble offers a gentle introduction to new tastes without relying on processed sugars.

The soft, chewable oats provide a great opportunity for babies to practice their chewing skills, while the baked apple pieces offer a burst of natural sweetness.

Additionally, the crumble's fibre-rich oats help promote healthy digestion in infants. With its delicious taste, nutritional benefits, and baby-friendly texture, a sugar-free apple oat crumble is a fantastic option for those embarking on the exciting journey of baby-led weaning.

If you’re looking for a sugar-free dessert, you will have to give this a go.

    Ingredient information

Bramley apple - As mentioned, Bramley apple works the best in my opinion for an apple crumble. Two fresh apples would work well if you like a bite to your crumble. Great for little hands with a sweet tooth.

Oats - To make this gluten free you could use gluten free rolled oats (quick oats) to be sure for gluten free babies. You could use oat flour or almond flour for a smooth topping. Or you could blitz up the oats especially if you are using steel cut oats to make a fine powder, using a food processor.

Unsalted butter - I always have unsalted butter in my fridge for cooking. The best to use for toddlers and babies. For a dairy free alternative you could use coconut oil.

Ground nutmeg - A little bit of nutmeg adds a kick to this recipe that makes this dish autumnal. You could add in a teaspoon of chia seeds too if you wish.

    Serving suggestion

I serve this to my son with some natural Greek style yogurt. But you could serve with crème fraiche, or even drizzle with some peanut butter as well.

For babies 12 months and over you could drizzle with a little maple syrup, and serve alongside a healthy apple crisp.

Other great meal ideas before the tender apples could be a beef stew, chicken curry or cottage pie.

    Storage instructions

Great news, this can be frozen. So if you did want to make a batch of the oaty apple oat crumble, you absolutely can.

The oaty apple oat crumble can be frozen in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Be sure to label the airtight container with the item and date.

You can store the oaty apple oat crumble in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

If you wanted to reheat the oaty apple oat crumble from frozen, you will need to place the crumble in the fridge in an airtight container overnight to thaw.

Pre heat the oven to 180C/350F, and heat for 20 minutes.

Once defrosted you will not be able to re freeze.

Equipment Used to Help With This Recipe

Mixing bowl - I like to use a stainless steel mixing bowl - they are usually lightweight and easy to clean.

Saucepan - So many pan sets out there but I particularly like to use pans with a non-stick surface for ease of cleaning and ones that are suitable for different types of hob surface.

Ovenproof dish - The design of this ovenproof dish allows for self-basting and will keep the food moist. It also has a non-stick coating, so is easy to clean!

Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.
