    Home made sausage rolls can be a suitable food option for babies, but it is essential to consider several factors before introducing them.

    Most importantly, the ingredients should be carefully selected to ensure they do not contain any unnecessary additives, salt, or spices that may not be appropriate for young children. My recipe is absolutely fine for babies.

    When preparing sausage rolls at home, using lean minced meat and pastry can be a healthier alternative.

    It's also crucial to ensure that the rolls are cut into appropriate sizes to prevent choking hazards.

    Given the texture and flavour, many babies may enjoy the experience of holding and exploring a sausage roll during their baby-led weaning journey, while still adhering to age-appropriate dietary guidelines. I love the fact that baby can enjoy the great British sausage roll tastes too and be included.

    How Do You Serve Sausage Rolls For Baby Led Weaning

    To serve a sausage roll for baby led weaning, first, ensure you choose ground mince with no added sugars or unhealthy preservatives.

    Once cooked and cooled, slice the sausage roll into manageable pieces, ideally about the size of your little one's fist, making it easy for them to grasp and bite.

    Offer it alongside some gentle dips, like plain Greek yogurt, to encourage exploration of textures and flavours.

    Place the pieces on a high chair tray or a plate, making it visually appealing and providing your baby with the opportunity to practice self-feeding while enjoying this wholesome and satisfying meal. Always supervise during mealtime to ensure safety. The full recipe can be found below.

    Ingredient information

    Pork - I have used pork mince for this recipe as i felt this was the safest to use for a sausage roll. Sometimes pork sausage mince can have added salt and other bits that I would not feel comfortable serving to baby. I have added lots of yummy herbs to give the pork flavour like sausage meat. You could use other ground meat such as ground chicken or beef mince.

    Onion - I have used a red onion but feel free to use a white onion if you did not have a red onion. I love to use red onions in recipes they add colour and vibrancy to a plate.

    Apple - I have used a gala apple but please do use whatever you have, the recipe will work well with any apple you may have. You could add in grated veggies too as hidden veg such as carrot and celery.

    Cranberry sauce - I have used cranberry sauce to add a festive taste to the sausage rolls. This ingredient really does bring the onions together to make a yummy jammy consistency when cooked.

    Sage - I have used both sage and thyme to bring the flavours of sausage meat to the pork. You could add in a little onion powder and garlic powder too if you like.

    Butter - I have used unsalted butter but you can use olive oil or a dairy free butter for dairy free babies.

    Puff pastry - Ready rolled puff pastry sheets are great (the store-bought puff pastry)! I have used ready rolled puff pastry as this is so convenient and gets the job done! This is what i need as a busy Mum.

    Egg - I have used a medium egg for the egg wash, you can use unsalted butter instead.

    Serving suggestion

    The homemade sausage rolls recipe will be great served with vegetables such as broccoli, peas or cauliflower. You could serve with a homemade ketchup too if you would like.

    The sausage rolls are the perfect finger food and great to pack on the go in lunch boxes. Equally great on a party buffet for all to enjoy.

    Storage instructions

    For best results the puff pastry sausage rolls can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days, stored in an air-tight container.

    If you wanted to freeze the sausage rolls the best way to do this is that you will need to make sure that the sausage rolls have cooled down before transferring to either a freezer bag or airtight container. You can cover with plastic wrap if you prefer. Ensure that the bag/airtight container is labelled with the item and the date. I use masking tape to label the airtight container.

    To defrost the sausage rolls, leave in the fridge overnight and make sure that they are fully defrosted, before re heating.

    To reheat, place the sausage rolls in a oven proof dish and reheat 180C/350F for 4-5 minutes. They can be eaten at room temperature.

    Once the sausage rolls have been defrosted you will not be able to reheat or refreeze.


    Equipment used to help with this recipe

    Baking sheet - I have chosen to use a non-stick and BPA free baking sheet - they are easy to clean and, if you buy more than one, easily stackable and easily stored.

    Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.

    Large bowl - Definitely choose a stainless steel one - they are lighter than the stone or glass ones and very easy to clean.

    This is a great recipe for baby led weaning. A great recipe for lunch boxes too!

    Ingredients

    Instructions

    1. Start by preheating your oven to 180C or 350F.
    2. Add the unsalted butter to a saucepan and melt, add in the onion, apple, cranberry sauce, sage and thyme, cover and cook on a low heat for 20 minutes. Stirring occasionally.
    3. If you can once the onions have cooked leave to cool slightly.
    4. Add the pork to a large bowl and add in the onion mixture.
    5. Mix together using a spoon, I find it easier to use my hands to mix.
    6. Take a baking tray and unroll the puff pastry on the parchment paper it comes in.
    7. Spoon the sausage mixture in the middle of the pastry, and then egg wash the beaten egg around the outside of the pastry.
    8. Pull the pastry over the pork to the other long edge until you have made a long roll, There is a lot of pork mixture and they will make large sausage rolls so you may have to move things around using your hands.
    9. Once covered, using a fork seal all of the edges, by pressing down the edges using the tip of the fork.
    10. Using a knife prick a hole in the centre of the sausage log.
    11. Egg wash the top and the sides (sprinkle with sesame seeds if you like) and pop the unbaked sausage rolls into your preheated oven. The cooking time will be 35 minutes until golden brown.
    12. Leave to cool slightly before serving to your baby. The sausage roll can be enjoyed cold too.

    Notes

    To make the recipe dairy free, you will need to replace the unsalted butter for olive oil.
