Healthy Peanut Butter and Banana Combo

Peanut butter and banana is a winning combination that not only appeals to children's taste buds but also offers a plethora of nutritional benefits. This classic duo makes for a fantastic and nutritious snack or meal option for children.

To begin with, peanut butter is a fantastic source of protein, which is essential for children's growth and development. It provides them with the building blocks they need for healthy muscles and tissues. Additionally, peanut butter is a good source of heart-healthy fats, which are crucial for proper brain development and function. These healthy fats also help children feel satisfied and energized, making peanut butter an excellent choice for a filling snack.

Bananas, on the other hand, are bursting with essential vitamins and minerals. They are a rich source of potassium, which is known to aid in maintaining healthy blood pressure levels. This is particularly significant for children, as it helps support their cardiovascular health. Bananas are also an excellent source of dietary fibre, which aids in digestion and keeps their gastrointestinal system healthy and regular.

Combining peanut butter and banana creates a harmonious balance of nutrients. The protein from the peanut butter and the fibre from the banana work together to promote satiety, making it an ideal snack to keep children satisfied and full between meals. Furthermore, the natural sweetness of the banana complements the rich and nutty flavor of the peanut butter, making it an appealing choice for even the pickiest eaters.

Kids love a sandwich! This is why I have chosen to make this bento box fun!

My son loves bananas so much, I decided to make a banana sandwich! But I added a few extras to make this a great nutritious lunch!

I have added in a 100% nut butter instead of ordinary butter and flaxseed for added goodness!

Of course if your little one has a peanut allergy you can leave this out and maybe replace with a thin layer of Greek yogurt or, of course, unsalted butter if you like.

I love the fact that this bento box includes many of my son’s favourite things! Kiwi, blueberry, banana and cheese! You can of course tailor this bento box to meet your child’s favourites when it comes to the sides!

It is really important when you are making the sandwich to roll the bread as thinly as possible, this will really help when you roll the the bread, because you do not want there to be a gap between bread and the banana.

The combination of peanut butter and banana is a nutritional powerhouse for children. It not only satisfies their taste buds but also provides essential nutrients for their growth, development, and overall health. So, whether it's a spread on whole-wheat toast, a dip for apple slices, a delicious smoothie or in a sandwich, as in this recipe, this classic pairing is a fantastic way to incorporate both protein and essential vitamins and minerals into your child's diet. Give this one a go for your little ones, it is so delicious, maybe get them to help you to make it! Kids love to get involved and are more likely to eat it if they have had a helping hand with the process!

    Ingredient information

Wholemeal bread - I use wholemeal bread, but you can use your choice of sliced bread. You could try GF bread to make the sandwich GF.

Peanut butter - I always use 100% nut butter, as this is the best to use as it has no added sugar or salt. It doesn’t have to be expensive either, you may need to check the labels but in most of not all supermarkets you can get 100% nut butters that don’t cost the earth.

Banana - My son loves bananas and this is why I have teamed it with a sandwich! Packed full of potassium too! Potassium helps with sleep, so this is a great lunch if your little ones are due a little nap afterwards.

Flaxseed - I talk about flaxseed a lot! The benefits are amazing! Packed with omega 3! Great if your little one is following a Vegan diet! Exactly like the peanut butter it’s not too expensive. I have found Aldi to be the cheapest place to buy it!

Cheddar cheese - Cheese is one of my son’s favourites! I have made into sticks so that they are easily picked up!

Kiwi - Lots of vitamin C in kiwis! Half a kiwi is enough for your children’s recommended RDA.

Blueberries - I like to add a few small pieces of fruit with lunch and snacks, blueberries are another favourite! What is your child’s favourite fruit? Let me know in the comments!

    Serving suggestion

This bento box is perfect served in the box as it is. Sometimes I like to add some plain natural yogurt or Greek yogurt in a little pot if my son is having a hungry day! You could also mix up the fruit idea to strawberries and blackberries or orange segments and peach slices.

    Storage instructions

If you really wanted to get organised you could absolutely make this ahead of time! For example if you wanted to make this on a Sunday ready for Monday’s lunch, you could technically keep this in the fridge for up to 2 days in the fridge. So this is perfect if you needed a lunch that lasts. You could double or triple the recipe to make multiple lunches, keep in airtight containers and you know you have lunches ready for part of the week.
