    Healthy Sandwich Sides For BLW

For BLW-friendly healthy sandwich sides, consider offering soft-cooked carrot sticks, avocado slices, cucumber strips, steamed broccoli florets, or mashed sweet potato to go with this cheesy roll up recipe.

These options provide a variety of textures and flavours to complement a sandwich while being easy for babies to grip and self-feed.

Remember to cut the food into appropriate sizes to prevent choking hazards and always supervise your baby during mealtimes.

These nutritious sides can help introduce your little one to a range of vegetables and encourage them to explore new tastes as they navigate their BLW journey.

    Sandwiches For Baby

Sandwiches are an excellent choice for baby-led weaning (BLW) due to their convenience and versatility. Offering a sandwich to a baby encourages them to practice their grasping and chewing skills, promoting self-feeding and independence from an early age.

Additionally, sandwiches can be adapted to suit a variety of dietary preferences and food textures, making them suitable for babies at different stages of weaning. By including a variety of fillings such as mashed avocado, shredded chicken, or hummus, parents can introduce a range of flavours and nutrients to their baby in a simple and manageable way.

The handheld nature of sandwiches makes them easy for babies to hold and explore, fostering sensory development and encouraging them to engage with different types of food.

Overall, sandwiches provide a convenient, nutritious choice for baby.

    Ingredient information

Slice of bread - I have used wholemeal sliced bread, but you could use a white bread or a mix of the both.

Mozzarella - I have used used grated mozzarella but you could use a grated cheddar cheese.

Unsalted butter - I have used an unsalted butter, you could use a cream cheese or dairy free cream cheese if you prefer.

Olive oil - I have used olive oil, but avocado oil would be a great alternative. Coconut oil would work too.

    Serving suggestion

The cheese rollups would be great as a tasty lunch served with cucumber batons or halves, carrot batons. Fruit such as strawberries, raspberries or blackberries. Great recipe for BLW, older kids and the whole family

You could also serve with a homemade tomato sauce or serve with a homemade tomato soup.

Other recipes you may like: Ham and cheese croissant, Houmous roll up or Eggy slice.

    Storage instructions

The egg roll-ups can be kept in the fridge in airtight containers or a freezer-bag for up to 3 days in the fridge. Or you can freeze the rolls in freezer bags or an airtight container for up to 3 months. Which is great as you will always have a lunch, dinner or snack in the freezer ready to be defrosted for a quick meal or snack.

If you want to defrost the best way to do this is to take the roll slice out of the freezer, and leave in the fridge overnight until fully thawed.

The rolls are best eaten chilled, as they do not reheat to well, If you want to reheat you will need to heat in the oven on 180C or 350F for 5 minutes.

Once reheated the rolls will not be able to be frozen again.

Equipment used to help with this recipe

Frying pan - I love the non-stick surface of this particular frying pan and it’s suitable for all types of hob.

Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.

    Ingredients

    Instructions

    1. Start by removing all of the crusts from the 2 slices of bread.
    2. Roll the 2 slices of bread using a rolling pin.
    3. Lightly butter the 2 slices of bread, add an extra layer of butter down the longer side of the bread and sprinkle over the cheese on each slice.
    4. Roll the pieces of bread length ways and use the butter to stick the bread together.
    5. Next, beat the egg in a small bowl and dip both rolls in the egg mixture until completely covered.
    6. Heat the olive oil in a frying pan on a medium heat, and place the rolls in the frying pan and cook on each side for 30-40 seconds, until the cheese has melted and the egg is cooked on all sides with a golden brown colour.
    7. You can use the leftover beaten egg to make a little omelette that you can serve with the rolls.

    Notes

You could easily make the recipe gluten-free by using a sliced gluten-free bread.

You could make the recipe vegan/dairy free by using an unsalted butter and grated dairy free/vegan cheese.
