    Eggy Bread Baby Led Weaning Recipe

    This recipe is suitable from 6 months old without the sultanas as they may be a choking hazard, with the sultanas it is suitable from 12 months.

    My son loves anything egg related!

    It’s a go to when he is going through a fussy stage.

    He’ll always eat, scrambled egg, omelette or mashed boiled egg.

    It seemed fitting that I create another egg related recipe that I know he’ll eat and enjoy, using simple ingredients which is usually best for baby’s diet.

    It’s also great that he is able to eat the eggy slice cold which makes it a great lunch or as part of a snack.

    I love the fact that eggs are packed full of nutrients and eggs are so speedy to cook, which is a win when you’re always in a hurry! Great for a perfect breakfast idea.

    I’ve added the baby cucumber to the bottom of the eggy slices as this is another great easy snack idea or as part of a lunch idea.

    If you haven’t tried mini cucumbers they are so cute and are a change from the usual cucumbers, an easy way to mix things up. You can use cutters to cut out shapes or make cute finger food from them.

    The mango and raspberry combination is another match made in heaven. A delicious addition to this box that finishes the lunch with a sweet note.

    When Can My Baby Eat Eggy Bread

    Babies can start eating eggy bread once they have reached around 6 months of age. It is important to ensure that the bread is soft and well-cooked to avoid any choking hazards.

    Additionally, the eggs should be thoroughly cooked to reduce the risk of salmonella, you should be absolutely fine in the UK as most eggs have the red lion stamp which means the hens are vaccinated against salmonella.

    When Can Babies Eat Bread

    Babies can generally start eating bread around 6-8 months of age, once they have started on solid foods and have shown no signs of allergies. Bread is a great finger food for baby-led weaning.

    It is important to offer whole grain bread or wholemeal bread to ensure they receive essential nutrients and fibre. White bread is ok but whole grain/wholemeal is a little better.

    If you use a seeded bread, this is great but just be mindful of any large seeds.

    Begin with small, soft pieces of bread, such as finger strips or bite-sized pieces to avoid any choking hazards. Perfect for little hands.

    Always supervise your baby while they are eating and introduce new foods gradually to monitor for any adverse reactions. As eggs are potential allergens.

    Ingredient information

    Extra virgin olive oil - I use this oil as my go to. If you wanted to use unsalted butter that would work and taste so good as an alternative.

    Sandwich thin - These are a great alternative to bread, and mix up the typical sandwich carrier in a week. Not only that they work so well for this eggy recipe! They soak up the egg so well, the same as a slice of bread. Great for finger foods too.

    Free range egg - I know it is difficult to get hold of eggs at the moment, but if you can get your hands on free range eggs, it is a better egg as part of healthy chickens. Egg yolk and egg whites are ok from 6 months old with the red lion stamp.

    Mini cucumber - These are great! They are so cute and perfect for little ones and also great for adults too! They are a fun alternative to a regular cucumber. And great for dipping. Once cut correctly.

    Mango - I mention below, but if your little one has not tried mango, you will have to let them taste and try it!

    Raspberries - A vitamin C boost with raspberries are always a good idea! Great for weaning and beyond.

    Mild cheddar cheese - My son likes mature cheddar and mild cheddar. I have on this occasion used mild cheddar cheese. I like to get as much protein and calcium in his diet as I can.

    Sultanas - I prefer sultanas to raisins and so does my son. I give raisins/sultanas to my son in small quantities. And if you’re looking for a cost effective money saving tip. Bulk buy in the large bags and store in an airtight container and they will last longer. I find the small boxes of raisins go off quickly and are poor quality.

    Serving suggestion

    You could serve this with a side of Greek yogurt with peanut butter mixed, or with blueberry purée or some added fruit pieces if desired. Great if you need any additional breakfast ideas.

    Or you could swap out the mango to include strawberries with the raspberries. If your little one has not tried mango, Give it a go, this is the best way to do so for the first time.

    Storage instructions

    This bento box can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.

    The eggy slice is best served eaten fresh and cooled slightly. But it can absolutely be eaten cold and kept in the fridge for the next day.

    The eggy bread can be stored in the freezer for up to 3 months if needed. Store in an airtight container or freezer bag. Just make sure you leave the eggy bread to cool before transferring to the container or bag.

    To defrost the eggy bread, leave to thaw in the fridge overnight for the next day ideally.

    Once defrosted you will not be able to refreeze.

    Makes 1 bento box for little tummies

    • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil or a knob of butter (unsalted)

    • 1 wholemeal sandwich thin, 2 slices

    • 1 free range egg, beaten (you can add a splash of milk if you like)

    • 1 mini cucumber, sliced thinly

    • 1/4 mango, sliced thinly

    • 3 raspberries

    • 10g mild cheddar cheese, grated

    • Handful sultanas (optional)

    Instructions

    1. Start by preheating a little oil or a little butter in a frying pan on a medium high heat. Whisk egg if you haven’t done so.

    2. Dip bread slices in the egg mixture, and turn and make sure the thins are fully coated in the egg.

    3. Place the soaked bread in the frying pan and turn down the heat slightly to a medium heat, cook for 2 minutes, turn over and cook for a further 2 minutes on the other side until golden brown.

    4. Do the same with the other sandwich thin and set the slices of eggy bread aside on a plate lined with kitchen paper.

    5. Place the mango in one small compartment of the bento box followed by the raspberries.

    6. Place the grated cheese in the other small compartment of the bento box, top with the sultanas (optional).

    7. Next, place the cucumber in the remaining compartment and cut the eggy slices into cubes or strips and place on top of the cucumber.

    Recipe notes

    If you wanted to use a piece of bread instead of the sandwich thin you absolutely can.

    I would always suggest using wholemeal bread but you can use your soft slice bread of choice.
