    Ingredient information

Canned chickpeas - I love to use chickpeas in recipes, they are cheap to buy and full of nutritional value.

One tip is to keep the chickpea water, which is called Aquafaba, it is like an egg white substitute when whipped with an electric mixer.

You can make a plant based meringue or even a chocolate mousse.

Lemon juice - adding acidity to any dish brings out the flavour.

The touch of lemon in this recipe tastes so yummy.

Garlic powder - I love using garlic powder as a substitute for fresh garlic.

If you have this in your cupboard when you have run out of fresh garlic it works just as well and is so convenient.

Paprika - This spice is so tasty in dishes and can be used in a wide variety of dishes.

I would definitely go and get some for your cupboard if you do not.

Smoked paprika - I love smoked paprika, this spice works so well with hummus as the smoky tastes so good in a dip.

I would definitely recommend if you do not have any in your cupboard.

Sesame seeds - Sesame seeds have a multitude of health benefits but as they are a common allergy in babies can be omitted if needed.

Alternatively, you can use tahini if you have it, I never really have tahini as a standard in my cupboard so I use sesame seeds instead.

Chickpea water (Aquafaba) - chickpea water, or Aquafaba as it is officially named, is so versatile if you are plant based or interested in a plant based diet.

It can be used as an egg white substitute for meringues, mousses or cakes.

Olive oil - you can use a sesame oil if you have it, or an avocado oil.

I like to use olive oil as I know I always have it.

Black pepper - you can leave this out, but I feel it gives a great flavour and adds to the smoked paprika.

    Storage instructions

Store the hummus in an airtight container for up to 3 days in the fridge.

You can freeze the hummus in an ice cube tray if you like and portion the hummus so that you can use what you need.

To defrost the hummus leave in the fridge overnight in an airtight container and enjoy the next day when it is fully thawed.

Once thawed you will not be able to re freeze.

Equipment used to help with this recipe

I have used my NutriBullet for this recipe, it makes blending food so much easier, and is a great space saver too!

I also love to use either a large airtight container or small airtight containers for storage.

I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others.

They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.
