What Are Oats?
Oats are a versatile whole grain that are popular for their nutritional benefits and ease of preparation. They are commonly consumed in various forms such as porridge (oatmeal), oat flour, and oat milk.
For baby-led weaning, oats are a fantastic choice due to their soft texture when cooked, making them manageable for babies who are just learning to self-feed. They are also a good source of fibre, which can help support healthy digestion in infants.
Additionally, oats contain important nutrients like iron, which is vital for a baby's growth and development. They are a great option for introducing solid foods during the weaning process, offering a nutritious and easily digestible option for little ones.
Overall, oats can be a nutritious and convenient choice for parents looking to incorporate whole grains into their baby's diet during the exciting journey of baby-led weaning.
Jumbo Oats Vs Rolled Oats
Jumbo oats and rolled oats are two common varieties of oats that differ mainly in their size and texture. Jumbo oats are larger and thicker compared to rolled oats, which are flattened during processing.
Jumbo Oats:
Jumbo oats take longer to cook due to their larger size and thicker texture.
They provide a chewier consistency when cooked, making them ideal for hearty porridges or oat-based recipes where texture is desired.
Some people prefer jumbo oats for their robust and satisfying bite.
Rolled Oats:
Rolled oats are thinner and flatter since they are steamed and rolled, resulting in a quicker cooking time.
They tend to absorb more liquid and cook faster, making them convenient for everyday breakfast porridge or baking.
Rolled oats are popular for their softer texture, making them versatile for various recipes like overnight oats, cookies, or granola bars.
In summary, the choice between jumbo oats and rolled oats depends on personal preference and the desired texture in your final dish. As mentioned below, these are very easy to make dairy free and vegan, all you will need to do is make some simple swaps!
If you need an easy recipe that will take no time at all to whip up! This is the recipe for you!
Ingredient information
Plain Greek yogurt - Packed full of calcium and protein, this is always a great addition to any babies diet.
Rolled oats - I love to use rolled oats, but you can use your choice of oats, such as jumbo oats or quick oats.
Strawberries - If you wanted to use fresh fruit such as blueberries or raspberries you absolutely could. Healthy strawberry recipes are always a favourite in our home.
Peanut butter - I use 100% smooth peanut butter, but you can use your bit butter of choice.
Freeze dried strawberries - I love to use these in recipes, but they are completely optional.
Serving suggestion
These are great served on their own, they are a great little snack!
If you did want to serve this as part of a substantial snack, you could serve with some fresh berries such as raspberries or blackberries or even some strawberry purée for dipping (real fruit puree is better than a pouch).
Other great oat recipes: Oaty bars, teething biscuit or Greek yogurt cookies.
Storage instructions
The Oaty bars are obviously best kept in the freezer as they are a freezer item.
They can be kept in the freezer for up to 3 months which is great!
Use an airtight container or freezer bag for storage. You could tightly wrap in cling film (plastic wrap) too.
Why not double the ingredients and you will have 12 snack bars ready to go in the freezer! Perfect!
Equipment Used To Help With This Recipe
Air-tight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.
Nutri bullet - I have found a blender to be an invaluable tool in the preparation of many of my baby led weaning recipes.
Recipe | Healthy Frozen Yogurt Strawberry Oat (Oatmeal) Bars
Ingredients
Makes 6 bars
100g natural Greek style yogurt (plus 3 teaspoons extra for garnish)
50g ground rolled oats or any oats
4 medium strawberries, mashed
1 teaspoon 100% smooth peanut butter
1/2 teaspoon freeze dried strawberries (optional)
Instructions
Start by preparing a 6x6 inch baking pan or baking dish with parchment paper so that it covers the sides, this will make it easy to remove.
Blitz the oats in a Nutri bullet or food processor.
Pop the creamy yogurt in a large bowl (or medium saucepan if you don’t have a bowl) with the mashed fresh strawberries and mix until combined.
Add in the ground oats (dry ingredients) and stir until everything is mixed together.
Pour strawberry mixture into the prepared pan/dish. Smooth until level using the back of a spoon. Scrape any remaining oat mixture using a spatula.
Dollop on the extra yogurt and peanut butter spaced out, and using a skewer or sharp knife, swirl the peanut butter and yogurt, lightly into the yogurt mixture.
Sprinkle over the freeze dried strawberries if you are using and pop in the freezer for at least an hour.
Take out of the freezer at least 5-10 minutes before serving, so that the bar is easily bit into. How soft or hard the bar is up to you!
Cut into squares/small pieces for older babies or you can use a pastry cutter if you wish.
Hope you and your family enjoy!
Recipe notes
If you wanted to make these bars dairy free/vegan, all you will need to do is swap out the Greek yogurt for a dairy free alternative such as almond milk yogurt.
If you wanted to make the recipe fully gluten free, you will need to use gluten-free oats or you could use a combination of gluten-free oats and almond flour.
Easily adaptable and still taste so delicious!
