    The mixture is refrigerated for several hours or overnight to allow the flavours to combine together.

    On the other hand, overnight oats involve soaking raw rolled oats in milk, yogurt, or a milk alternative overnight, often with added fruits, nuts, seeds, or sweeteners.

    Overnight oats are typically eaten cold the next morning, whereas bircher muesli can be served cold or slightly warmed.

    In summary, the main difference lies in the ingredients used and the soaking time, with bircher having a more complex flavour profile due to the addition of grated fresh fruits.

    Ingredient information

    Milk - I have used whole milk for this delicious breakfast. From 6 months to 2 years whole milk is best for your baby.

    After they turn 2 you could switch to semi-skimmed or skimmed milk.

    Oats - I have used traditional rolled oats/quick oats, and I find these work best for this recipe.

    If you used a jumbo oat/steel-cut oats i would blitz to make an oat flour.

    Apple - I have used a regular medium sized apple for this recipe. I have coarsely grated the apple.

    Flaxseed - I have added flaxseed for added nutrition, you could leave this out if you wanted to.

    Cinnamon - Cinnamon and apple is a lovely combination, which is why I have included within the recipe.

    Yogurt - I have used a plain Greek yogurt, you could leave this out and just use milk.

    Serving suggestion

    The great thing about these pots is that they can be made ahead of time for a complete breakfast in the morning. Great for little fingers.

    You could drizzle with peanut butter or almond butter and stir that in for added flavour and protein to the pots.

    Storage instructions

    The Bircher pot can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container or kept in the kilner jar for up to 3 days.

    The pot can be served at room temperature, but you will not be able to store in the fridge afterwards if you do this.

    You could freeze the pot in the freezer and take out when you may need.

    To defrost the pots from the freezer, you will need to leave in the fridge overnight to defrost.

    Once defrosted you will be able to store in the fridge for up to 2 days, but you will not be able to re freeze.

    Equipment used to help with this recipe

    Kilner jars - Hygienic glass jars that you can purchase either with a screw top or an airtight clip top. Ideal for storing small amounts of homemade ketchup and chutney.

    Pyrex jug - A measuring jug is a must-have kitchen utensil and I like the glass Pyrex jugs hygiene and ease of cleaning.

    The measuring markers are easily readable too.

    Ingredients

    Makes 1 portion

    • 2 tablespoons rolled oats

    • 1/2 teaspoon flaxseed

    • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

    • 1/2 apple (20g) grated

    • 6 tablespoons whole milk

    • 3 tablespoons yogurt

    Instructions

    1. Place the oats into the jar or pot, followed by the grated apple, flaxseed and cinnamon.

    2. Measure out and pour in the milk and yogurt and stir.

    3. Place in the fridge for about 2 hours minimum or leave over night if you wish.

    Recipe notes

    You can make this recipe plant based by using a plant based milk in stead of dairy cow’s milk, such as almond milk.

    You can replace the Greek yogurt with coconut yogurt.

    You could also add in a nut butter such as cashew butter or almond butter that would work nicely.

    You could use the food processor to blitz some pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds, or you can get these in nut butter form too for added nutrition.

    Including any of these will be ok for baby from 6 months of age.

    Chia seeds would also be a great addition too.
