Table of Contents
Can Babies Have Lamb Mince
Yes, babies can have lamb mince for baby-led weaning, typically from around six months of age. Which is why this lamb mince pasta for BLW is great for baby especially if they are trying lamb for the first time.
Lamb is a good source of protein, iron, and essential nutrients, making it a suitable option for growing infants.
When preparing lamb mince for your little loves, ensure that it is thoroughly cooked and offered in small, manageable pieces to prevent choking.
You can combine the lamb with vegetables, allowing babies to explore different textures and flavours while encouraging self-feeding.
Always monitor your child for any signs of allergies or digestive issues when introducing new foods.
Can You Substitute Lamb Mince For Beef Mince
You can substitute lamb mince for another ground meat such as beef mince or ground beef in this recipe if beef is all that you have available. While the dish will still work with beef mince, it is important to note that it will produce a slightly different overall flavour.
Lamb and red meat tends to offer a richer, more robust taste due to its fat content and inherent gamey notes, whereas beef mince has a milder flavour.
Depending on your little one's palate, this change might be a yummy variation or a surprising twist.
Which Pasta Is Ok For Baby-led weaning
When considering pasta for baby-led weaning, penne, fusilli, and orzo are all suitable options.
Penne's tube shape makes it easy for little hands to grasp and chew, while fusilli's spiral design can help toddlers pick up sauce along with the pasta, enhancing both texture and flavour.
Orzo, being small and rice-shaped, is perfect for babies who are just starting out with different shapes and sizes, allowing them to easily manage it as they develop their eating skills. Orzotto is a great recipe for this.
Each of these pasta types can be served with a variety of healthy sauces or mixed with vegetables to create nutritious meals for your little one.

Lamb - I have used lamb mince or ground lamb for this recipe, it works soo nicely and works so well with all the other ingredients used, especially with the paprika and curry powder.
Curry powder - I have used a little curry powder, which works so nicely with the lamb mince.
Garlic - I have used garlic granules for the recipe, you can use garlic powder or a fresh crushed garlic cloves if you like.
Onion powder - This is a great staple to have in the store cupboard, great to add more flavour to any dish really. I love it.
Paprika - This is another great staple to have in the store cupboard. You can use sweet paprika if you have it, but the recipe works really well with the usual paprika too which I have used in this recipe.
Onion - I have used a red onion, but you can use a white onion too if you prefer.
Greek yogurt - This is great to add to meals as a sauce or just to add a little more protein and calcium to any meal. I love the versatility of Greek yogurt for sweet and savoury dishes.
Tomato - I have used a few cherry tomatoes for this recipe, you can use tomatoes that you have if you did not have cherry tomatoes.
Butter - I have used unsalted butter for the recipe, it is great to use unsalted butter for your baby.
Pasta - I have used a spiral style pasta for this recipe, other pastas that are great for baby led weaning are penne, pappardelle pasta and fuselli pasta.
Serving suggestion
The lamb pasta would be great served as it is, with all the added components of the Greek yogurt, butter sauce and tomatoes.
You could add a little fresh parsley to the top as a delicious garnish if you like too.
A little cooked baby spinach would also be a great side dish to accompany the pasta dish.

Storage instructions
The pasta (just the pasta and the lamb mince) can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Or you could portion into smaller airtight containers and store in the fridge for up to 3 days. Both can be frozen for up to 3 months. Just make sure the pasta has cooled to room temperature before transferring to an airtight container.
To defrost and re heat correctly, take the airtight container out of the freezer and place in the fridge overnight until completely thawed.
Once thawed, place the pasta into a saucepan and reheat until piping hot, then leave to cool slightly and check the temperature before serving to your baby.
Please note that once defrosted and reheated you will not be able to freeze again.
Equipment used to help with this recipe
Saucepan - So many pan sets out there but I particularly like to use pans with a non-stick surface for ease of cleaning and ones that are suitable for different types of hob surface.
Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.

Quick Lamb Mince Pasta For BLW and Toddlers
Ingredients
Instructions
- Start by frying the lamb mince in a large saucepan or frying pan for about 5 minutes, breaking down into small pieces using a wooden spoon. You do not need to add any olive oil or butter to the pan as the lamb will release the juices from the meat.
- Once the meat is turning brown add the diced onion to the pan and cook for a further 5 minutes on a medium heat.
- Add the curry powder, onion powder, garlic granules, 3 teaspoons of paprika to the pan and mix together. Cook the lamb mince for a further 10 minutes on a medium-high heat.
- Pour your pasta of choice into a separate pan of boiling water and cook as per packet instructions. Make sure the pasta is not al dente but very soft when cooked.
- To make the butter sauce, place the butter into a microwavable dish and melt the butter for 10-20 seconds in the microwave.
- Add the remaining 1/4 teaspoon of paprika to the melted butter and mix together using a spoon.
- To serve, place the pasta on a plate. drizzle a little of the butter sauce all over the pasta.
- Spoon the Greek yogurt on top of the pasta followed by the lamb mince. Top with the tomatoes or you can serve them to the side.
Notes
You can add a little more of the garlic granules to the plain Greek yogurt if you like, to make a creamy garlic sauce. This isn’t for everyone so you can leave this as per the recipe and just use plain yogurt.
If you wanted to add a little spice to the pasta dish you can add a few chilli flakes to the lamb mince (for the adults).
You can also top the lamb with a little bit of grated cheddar cheese.
