How Do You Serve Salmon For BLW?

When serving salmon pieces for Baby-Led Weaning (BLW), it is essential to ensure that the fish is cooked thoroughly to avoid any risks of illness.

Begin by baking or steaming a fillet of salmon until it is fully cooked and can easily flake with a fork.

Once cooked, allow the salmon to cool before serving it to your baby.

For BLW, you can then flake the salmon into small, manageable pieces that are easy for your baby to pick up and feed themselves.

This is a great finger food.

Serving alongside soft cooked vegetables or fruits can provide an easy dinner for your fussy eaters.

Ensure to supervise your baby closely during mealtime to prevent any choking hazards.

How Do I Cut Salmon For My 6 Month Old?

To safely prepare salmon for your 6-month-old, begin by ensuring the salmon is boneless and cooked thoroughly to avoid any potential health risks.

Once cooked, use a clean knife to cut the salmon into small, bite-sized pieces or strips to prevent choking hazards.

You may also consider mashing or flaking the salmon into smaller, more manageable pieces for your baby to easily consume.

Always monitor your baby closely while they are eating and consult with a health visitor if you have any concerns about introducing salmon into their diet at this stage.

Is Salmon Skin Ok For Babies?

Salmon is generally considered safe for babies to consume as it is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and protein, which are important for their growth and development.

However, it is crucial to ensure that the salmon is thoroughly cooked to kill any harmful bacteria and to remove all bones to prevent choking hazards.

Introducing salmon to babies should be done gradually to rule out any potential allergies.

As with any new food, it's recommended to start with small portions and monitor for any adverse reactions before increasing the amount.

    Ingredient information

Fresh salmon - I have used frozen wild salmon fillets, I find fresh fish is a bit cheaper in the frozen aisle.

You could use a different fish option such as cod or haddock. you could also used canned salmon too (you will not be able to freeze the nuggets if you use canned salmon)

Cream cheese - I have used a plain full fat cream cheese. There are cream cheeses with added herbs and garlic this would be a lovely addition instead of plain cream cheese.

Dill - I have used a dried dill but if you had fresh dill you could use this too. The recipe works well with chives, mixed herbs or a little garlic powder.

Lemon - A little lemon juice elevates this recipe, you could leave it out but it works really well with it added in.

Wholemeal bread - You can use any sliced bread that you have if you wanted to.

Breadstick - You could leave this ingredient out, and just use bread as the breadcrumb. But i find it makes for lovely bread crumbs.

Egg - I have used a free range egg for this recipe, you could use an egg replacer for this recipe for egg free babies.

    Serving suggestion

The salmon bites would be great served with sweet potatoes such as sweet potato wedges or regular potato wedges or potato smiles. You could also serve with homemade baked beans too or delicious peas and broccoli.

    Storage instructions

The salmon cakes once cooled, can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

To store in the freezer, leave the nuggets to cool and store in an airtight container or in an airtight freezer bag.

They can be kept in the freezer for up to 3 months

If you wanted to reheat the nuggets, you will only be able to reheat once thawed from the fridge.

I would suggest heating them up in the oven, at 180C or 350C, for 10 minutes.

Leave to cool before serving to your baby.

Equipment used to help with this recipe

Large bowl - Definitely choose a stainless steel one - they are lighter than the stone or glass ones and very easy to clean.

Baking tray - A white ceramic oven to table dish that is dishwasher and freezer safe.

Airtight container - I love the non-stick surface of this particular frying pan and it’s suitable for all types of hob.

Nutri bullet - I have found a blender to be an invaluable tool in the preparation of many of my baby led weaning recipes.
