Can I Serve An Apple Fritter To My Baby?

My old-fashioned apple fritters (similar to an apple pancake) are made with ground oats, grated apple, cinnamon (can be left out), and oat milk, with no added sugar, which can indeed be a tasty and nutritious option for your baby starting from 6 months old.

These basic ingredients offer a good mix of flavours and nutrients that can be beneficial for your little one. An easy recipe for all the family too.

Just ensure that the easy apple fritters are cooked well and cut into age-appropriate sizes to prevent any choking hazards.

Enjoy sharing the best apple fritters with your baby and toddler, especially those with a sweet tooth.

When Can I Serve Oat Milk To My Baby?

Oat milk can be a suitable drink alternative for babies once they are around 12 months old, as it can be a good source of nutrients like vitamin D and calcium.

However, it is essential to ensure that it is unsweetened and fortified to mimic the nutritional content of cow's milk.

When incorporating oat milk into recipes for infants, starting around 6 months of age can be appropriate,

but it's crucial to monitor your baby for any signs of allergies or digestive issues.

    Grated Apples

Grated apple is an excellent choice when introducing solids to babies starting from 6 months old.

Its soft texture makes it easy for babies who are just beginning to explore different foods to chew and swallow safely.

Juicy apples are of course a good source of essential nutrients such as fibre, vitamin C, and antioxidants, which are beneficial for a growing baby's development. If you are able to go apple picking this is the best way to pick an apple and also plan for a fun day.

Grating the apple also helps to prevent any choking hazards, making it a convenient and safe option for introducing new flavours and textures to your little one's diet.

The natural sweetness of apples in apple recipes can help babies develop a taste for healthy, whole foods early on.

How To Serve Apple Fritters To Baby?

To serve an apple fritter to your baby, you can adjust the method depending on the age of your little one.

At 6 months old, you can offer strips of the fritter. From 9 months old, you can serve in small bite sized pieces.

At 12 months old, your baby can handle slightly larger pieces of the fritter, still ensuring it is soft and easy to chew.

You can incorporate more toppings like a drizzle of honey (from 12 months) for added taste.

Always closely supervise your baby while they are eating to ensure their safety.

    Ingredient information

Oats - I have used rolled oats, the recipe will work with any oats including jumbo oats if they are blitzed in the food processor or Nutri Bullet.

Oat milk - You could use an almond milk or soy milk, I find the flavour is tasty with oat milk. Of course you could use cow’s milk such as whole milk if your baby is not following a vegan/plant based diet.

Fresh apples - I used a granny smith apples, but you can use any delicious apples of your choice. If using mini apples, i would grate 2 of those for this recipe. Great to try a different apple in a recipe for the first time. You could use apple chunks or diced apple if needed.

Cinnamon - You can leave this out if you wanted to and just use the apple, oats and milk.

Vegan butter - I used a Vegan block butter for this recipe, you could also use olive oil or avocado oil too, which makes the apple fritters vegan.

    Storage instructions

The fried apple fritters once cooled, can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container for the next day and stored for up to 3 days.

If you wanted to reheat the fritters, you will only be able to reheat once from the fridge.

The easiest way is heating them up in the oven, at 180C or 350F, for 10 minutes. Leave to cool before serving to your baby.

You could also pop in the toaster for a few minutes to heat through, if this is your only option.

To store the easy homemade apple fritters in the freezer, leave the fritters to cool at room temperature and store in an freezer-safe container or in airtight freezer bags. Layer in between parchment paper so they are easily removable.

They can be kept in the freezer for up to 3 months.

The best way to defrost the fritters, leave in the fridge overnight to fully thaw.

Once thawed you will not be able to re-freeze.

Equipment used to help with this recipe

Nutri Bullet - I have found a blender to be an invaluable tool in the preparation of many of my baby led weaning recipes.

Large bowl - Definitely choose a stainless steel one - they are lighter than the stone or glass ones and very easy to clean.

Frying pan - I love the non-stick surface of this particular frying pan and it’s suitable for all types of hob.

Airtight container - A great way to keep the apple fritters fresh for a lot longer.
