This homemade recipe of mine features a soft homemade pizza dough that is easy for tiny hands to grab and chew, filled with a tasty combination of tomato sauce and melted cheese that toddlers will love.
Beyond being a hit with baby-led weaning (BLW) enthusiasts, these pizza poppers are a versatile after school snack, easy dinner option or a party food idea, that can be enjoyed by children of all ages, including the older kids.
The familiar flavours of pizza make this recipe a crowd-pleaser for the whole family, offering a convenient way to introduce toddlers to a variety of textures and tastes in a manageable and enjoyable manner.
Ingredient information
Plain flour - You could use a gluten-free flour if your little one has a gluten intolerance, or you could potentially use a oat flour too.
Greek yogurt - You could use a plant based plain greek yogurt if you wanted to make the recipe dairy free/vegan.
Oregano - You could use an Italian seasoning, dried basil or fresh basil or mixed herbs if you did not have oregano. A little garlic powder would be a nice addition too!
Tomato puree - I have used tomato puree, you could use a little pizza sauce (watch out for sugar content) or plain tinned tomatoes, I find the tomato puree great as I do not have to waste opening a jar or can.
Mozzarella - I have used mozzarella but you could use a cheddar cheese, Red Leicester or even a little ricotta cheese.
Olive oil - You could use melted butter instead or an avocado oil or garlic olive oil.
Serving suggestion
The mini bites would be great served with a tomato sauce for dipping, or you could serve with cucumber batons and some fresh fruit such as sliced banana or berries such as strawberries and blueberries.
The mini pizzas are great for lunch boxes as they can be eaten at ambient temperature.

Storage instructions
The poppers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days, stored in an airtight container.
If you wanted to freeze the poppers, you will need to make sure that the poppers have cooled down before transferring to either a freezer bag or airtight container. Ensure that the bag/airtight container is labelled with the item and the date. I use masking tape to label the airtight container. A great freezer meal option, that is needed most nights!
To defrost the poppers, leave in the fridge overnight and make sure that they are fully defrosted, before re heating.
To reheat, place the poppers in a oven proof dish and reheat 180C/350F for 4-5 minutes. They can be eaten at room temperature.
Once the poppers have been defrosted you will not be able to reheat or refreeze.
Equipment used to help with this recipe
Large bowl - Definitely choose a stainless steel one - they are lighter than the stone or glass ones and very easy to clean.
Baking tray - I have chosen to use a non-stick and BPA free baking sheet - they are easy to clean and, if you buy more than one, easily stackable and easily stored.

Ingredients
Makes 8 poppers
200g plain flour
200g plain Greek yogurt
2 teaspoons oregano
4 teaspoons tomato puree
60g mozzarella (1/2 a large mozzarella ball) cut into 8 small pieces
2-3 tablespoons olive oil
Instructions
Start by preheating your oven to 180C or 350F. Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
Pop the flour, yogurt and 1 teaspoon of the oregano into a large bowl along with the yogurt and mix using a spoon and then bring together using your hands to form a dough.
Flour a work surface and place the dough on the floured work surface and press down the dough using your hands. Cut into 8 pieces and separate the dough into pieces.
Flour the work surface again, take one piece of dough and flatten using your hands, you want the dough quite thin approx 3mm. Repeat with the other pieces of dough and flour the work surface each time as it can get quite sticky.
Take 1/2 a teaspoon of tomato puree. Using the back of a spoon spread a thin layer onto the dough. Sprinkle with a little oregano.
Take a piece of mozzarella and place in the centre of the dough.
Bring in an edge over the mozzarella and repeat until all the edges are concealing the dough making a ball. Place on the baking sheet. Repeat with all the dough pieces. You could use a mini muffin tin if you prefer.
Using a little water seal the bottom edges of the dough so that none of the filling escapes.
Brush the tops of the poppers with olive oil, and sprinkle with a little oregano.
Place in the oven for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
Leave to cool before serving to your baby.
Recipe notes
You could easily make this recipe gluten-free and dairy free/vegan.
Instead of using plain flour you could use a gluten free flour, and to make vegan/dairy free you could use a dairy free Greek yogurt and a dairy free cheese of your choice.
