    I don’t know about you, but I find making my own snacks way down there on my priority list!

    I think this is completely normal for busy parents, therefore if I’m making a snack for my son I need it to be an easy healthy recipe. Which is why this baby recipe with sweet potato is perfect for a quick snack idea. It is great for first finger foods too!

    My son likes the Veggie sticks, whilst it’s ok to give him these, I really wanted to try and recreate a crisp snack that was healthy and more importantly easy to make!

    Sweet potatoes are a great way to start with babies from 6 months of age, as they are sweet, delicious and colourful!

    The good news here is that they are made with just 3 simple ingredients, one being the sweet potato.

    Not only that, but they are gluten free, vegan and nut free!

    This is a great all round snack that your little ones will love, and a great snack for the rest of the family too!

    If you wanted they can be as part of a lunch or even add in a dip for of avocado or hummus to enjoy with. A great choice for the whole family.

    How To Cook Sweet Potato For Baby Led Weaning

    One way to cook sweet potato for baby-led weaning (BLW), begin by preheating the oven to 200°C. Wash the sweet potato thoroughly under running water and pat dry with a clean cloth.

    Next, peel the sweet potato and cut it into long batons or wedges, making sure they are of a suitable size for your baby to hold. Place the sweet potato pieces on a baking tray and drizzle with a little olive oil, tossing them to ensure they are evenly coated.

    Season with a pinch of mild herbs or spices like oregano or cinnamon, if desired. Roast in the oven for about 20-25 minutes or until tender, turning halfway through. Allow the sweet potato to cool before serving to your little one.

    Always remember to check the temperature before offering it to ensure it's not too hot.

    When introducing solid foods to your baby in their weaning journey, both sweet potatoes and regular potatoes are great options to think about.

    Sweet potatoes are rich in beta-carotene, which is beneficial for your baby's eyesight and overall growth. They also have a naturally sweet taste that babies often enjoy.

    On the other hand, regular potatoes are a good source of potassium and carbohydrates, providing energy for your little one's activities. Whichever you choose, ensure they are cooked thoroughly and mashed/roasted/baked to a suitable consistency for your baby's developmental stage.

    Sweet potato - Sweet potato crisps are so yummy so I had to make some of my own for my son! Healthy and sweet, they are so tasty and sweet. You could use a purple potato to make purple sweet potato chips.

    Olive oil - I have used a little oil, you can use avocado oil or even some coconut oil if a nuttiness is preferred.

    Black pepper - I have kept it simple and used black pepper to season, but you can use your child’s favourite! Garlic powder is a great addition too.

    Serving suggestion

    These can be eaten on their own as a yummy snack. They can be served as part of a sandwich lunch or they can be used with a dipping sauce such as hummus or full fat Greek yogurt or even eaten as part of a nacho style meal. The possibilities are endless!

    Storage instructions

    You can store the sweet potato chips in the fridge for up to three days in air-tight container.

    You can freeze and store the sweet potato wedges in airtight containers or a freezer bag for up to three months in the freezer.

    I would keep them in an airtight container and take them out and use them altogether, if you just wanted to thaw and reheat one at a time I would weave a strip of parchment paper around them for ease when frozen.

    Make sure when you thaw and re heat, that you take the sweet potato out of the freezer and thaw overnight in the fridge.

    To re heat successfully, you will need to re heat in the oven for up to 5-10 minutes, the oven temperature should be at 180 C or 350F.

    Make sure the sweet potato chips have cooled slightly before giving to your baby.

    Once thawed from the freezer and reheated you will not be able to freeze again.

    Ingredients

    • 1 small sweet potato, washed, thinly sliced, skin on

    • 1 teaspoon olive oil

    • A grind of black pepper

    Instructions

    1. Pre heat your oven to 180C or 350F. Prepare a baking sheet with baking parchment and set aside.

    2. Place the sliced sweet potato into a large bowl with the olive oil and black pepper.

    3. Mix using your hands or a spoon until all sides of the sweet potato are coated with olive oil and black pepper.

    4. Lay the sweet potato slices side by side (not overlapping) on the lined baking tray.

    5. Pop in the oven for 25 minutes, until golden brown.
