Table of Contents
Can I Give My Baby A Oat Banana Muffin?
Of course, you can consider feeding your baby no added sugar banana oat muffins for baby-led weaning (BLW).
When prepared with wholesome ingredients, banana oat muffins can provide a good source of dietary fibre from the oats and essential nutrients from the bananas.
The soft texture of the muffin can also make it easier for your baby to grasp and self-feed, supporting their development of fine motor skills.
Additionally, introducing different flavours and textures through homemade muffins can help expand your baby's palate and encourage healthy eating habits in the long run.
Always ensure that the muffin is appropriately sized and soft enough to be easily chewed and swallowed to minimise any choking hazards.
As with any new food, it's recommended to introduce one ingredient at a time to monitor for any potential allergies or sensitivities.
How Do I Serve A Muffin To My Baby?
When serving a muffin to your baby for Baby-Led Weaning (BLW), it's generally recommended to offer it in manageable portions.
For safety and to encourage self-feeding, you may want to consider breaking off small, bite-sized pieces from around 7 months.
Serving the muffin halved or whole from 6 months.
This allows your baby to grasp and explore the food, while also reducing the risk of choking.
Additionally, choosing a soft and moist muffin can make it easier for your baby to handle and consume.
Always closely supervise your baby during mealtimes and be mindful of any potential allergens in the muffin.
Oat Flour Versus Plain Flour
Oat flour is a wonderful alternative to plain flour, especially when introducing solids to your baby in Baby-Led Weaning (BLW).
Oat flour is rich in fibre, vitamins, and minerals, offering a nutritious addition to your baby's diet.
Oats also contain beta-glucans, which are beneficial for heart health.
When using oat flour in BLW, you are providing your baby with a wholesome and easy-to-digest grain that contributes to their overall nutrition.
Plus, its mild and slightly sweet flavour makes it appealing for young palates.
Always ensure that the oat flour is finely ground to prevent any choking hazards, and consult your health visitor before introducing new foods to your baby's diet.
Bananas
Bananas are a great choice for baby-led weaning (BLW) due to their natural sweetness, soft texture, and high nutritional value.
Rich in potassium, bananas can help support healthy growth and development in infants.
They are easy to grip and manipulate, making them an ideal first food for babies to practice their fine motor skills.
Bananas are also a good source of fibre, which can aid in digestion and help prevent constipation—a common concern during the transition to solid foods.
Additionally, their versatility allows for various serving options, such as mashed, sliced, or served as a whole, providing a sensory exploration experience for babies as they learn to self-feed.
Ingredient information
Rolled oats - These are great in a breakfast recipe, they are the perfect start to the day, and great for those busy mornings.
They are a great addition to this simple muffin recipe. The rolled oats can easily be made into an oat flour too, by blitzing in a food processor.
Banana - You can use overripe bananas for this recipe as they are very easy to mash to get a great mashed banana.
Baking powder - A little raising agent to make the muffins rise.
Serving suggestion
The 3 ingredient banana muffins is such an easy recipe and are great served on their own, or with a dollop of Greek yogurt and fresh fruit.
You could serve the muffins as part of an easy breakfast with a mango pot, or chia seed pudding.
Why not try spreading one half of the fluffy muffins with peanut butter or almond butter for added protein.
The muffins are great for lunch boxes or as a quick snack as they can be eaten at room temperature, you could pack with chicken nachos or a broccoli pizza.
Storage instructions
Store the muffins in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
The banana and raspberry muffins can be frozen in an airtight container or in a freezer bag for up to 3 months.
Be sure to label the freezer bags with the item and date, so it is clear how long they can be stored.
To label the airtight container I use masking tape this way it will not ruin the airtight container.
To defrost the muffins, keep them in an airtight container and defrost in the fridge overnight. Make sure they are fully defrosted before serving.
Equipment used to help with this recipe
Muffin tin= A non-stick muffin pan that will easily clean any spills from the muffin cases. You will need one of these to easily hold the muffin cases.
Silicone cups - I love reusable kitchen stuff! These silicone muffin cases are dishwasher and freezer safe and can be used in the oven up to 230 degrees C!
Ideal for individual baby portions.
Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others.
They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.
Large mixing bowl - I like to use a stainless steel mixing bowl - they are usually lightweight and easy to clean.
Nutri bullet - I have found a blender to be an invaluable tool in the preparation of many of my baby led weaning recipes.
